Christmas Decorating Tradition

It's Christmas Time in the city Poole house.
The tree is up, the stockings are hung with care, and the new ornaments have been given.

We have a tradition with the kids each year. On the day we put our tree, they get a new ornament of something they have done or enjoyed that year.

Being the crazy mama I am, I decided when the kids were little that it would be good for all the ornaments to follow a
theme, namely snowmen. This sometimes means a difficult search. The kids love seeing and hanging up their new ornaments each November. I thought I'd record the ornaments they have hanging on the tree so far.

And sometimes we add a family ornament to the tree like:

This one when we went to London for Christmas

                                           And this year we added
                                this snowman to commemorate
our fun on the beaches in Lisbon.

Jot me a note to share your favorite Christmas decorating traditions!

I'll sign off with a picture of our Snowman Tree

  1. I love this post- for several reasons! We have the same tradition in our house with the new ornament each year having to do with something they've done or enjoyed in the past year. But the snowman twist- wow! I can sometimes barely find any type of ornament that will do! So cool!!! And I love how you displayed all of those ornaments! Was that on Picassa??? I must know how you did that. I really enjoy reading your posts. Sometimes I marvel at how organized you are and how you get so much done and teach full time. I always struggled with that!

  2. We give the girls Christmas ornaments that have something to do with the year too! And....for some reason I cannot find our box of them this year. I am just sick about it. I am hoping they are in a box in the basement and we didn't lose them in our move. I am tearing up as I write this just thinking about it. On a side note, do you ever check out Hobby Lobby? They have a great selection of ornaments and that is usually where we get ours for the girls every year!

Ditto what Kate said. You are amazing to accomplish so much in the time you do!

  4. Kate- yes I used Picassa...I love that free program : ) I enjoy playing around with it so much. And thanks for your compliment : )

Adrian-I haven't tried Hobby Lobby...I will next year! I always end up getting them online. And I must admit that I have been tempted to buy a cute ornament and then help them 'experience' that activity...but I havn't given in to that yet....we'll see how desperate I get : ) Example: We found an ornament of a snowman skiing and though....hmmmmm....we could buy that and then take them skiing this next year...hmmm

    Deb-Thanks!

All of you!- I enjoy looking at your blogs very much...you are an inspiration.

  5. I love the ornament idea! We give the kids a vintage looking glass ornament each year but they don't have the special signifiance of your snowmen--I love that!
Our ornament tradition is to decorate the tree together and then the kids go out of the room while the last ornament is hung by Cody or me--it's a glass pickle ornament. The kids all come back in and search (with their eyes!) for the hidden pickle. Whoever finds it gets a prize--which is always a movie that all three of them would love!
I love your picassa work too! You have such a great eye for photography and layouts!
